Sciatica – Pain Along the Sciatic Nerve
This major leg nerve originates from several nerve roots exiting the lumbar spine.
Any disturbance in the area of these nerves can trigger the typical sciatic pain – a painful radiating sensation through the buttock and along the back of the thigh and lower leg.
The task here is to identify and correct the disturbance:
Possible treatments include nerve root infiltrations, facet nerve treatments, ablations, or treatment of the sacroiliac joint. In some cases, shortening of the piriformis muscle – which connects the leg to the hip and through which the sciatic nerve passes – may be one of the causes (piriformis syndrome).
In such cases, botulinum toxin infiltration can provide relief and reduce tension in the muscle.
