FAQ

  • How long does a denervation treatment last?

Usually between 1–3 years. In some cases, patients have experienced complete and permanent relief, with no return of pain even 6–7 years after the procedure.

  • An MRI showed a herniated disc – do I need inpatient surgery?

Only in specific cases. Often, pain centers activate in other areas, which can be treated more easily and less invasively through interventional pain therapy.

  • Can electrical (radiofrequency) therapy cause paralysis?

No. Only diseased pain-conducting nerves are treated. Nerves responsible for motor function or sensation are located far from the treatment site. Additionally, continuous X-ray guidance and safety mechanisms on the probe ensure safe application.

  • Will I be under general anesthesia?

No. All treatments are done using local anesthesia only.

  • What complications can occur during the procedure?

Potential risks include a small bruise, which the body absorbs on its own, or infection, which is prevented by sterile technique and pre-operative antibiotics. A temporary numbness in one leg may occur — a harmless side effect of the local anesthetic affecting nearby motor nerves.

  • Do I have to pay for the treatment myself?

You will receive an invoice, which you can submit to your health insurance provider along with proof of payment. Reimbursement depends on your insurance and the treatment type. Our doctors are happy to estimate how much will be reimbursed, once a specific therapy has been planned. Supplemental insurance usually covers the remaining costs not reimbursed by the statutory insurer.

  • Do I need to fast before the procedure?

No. In fact, having a light meal may help your circulation. You should, however, be able to lie comfortably on your stomach.

  • I have a pacemaker. Can I still receive radiofrequency treatment?

Yes. The radiofrequency used in pain therapy does not interfere with pacemakers.

  • Can I drive myself after an infiltration?

Yes, after a standard infiltration, you can drive yourself.
After a denervation procedure, you should have someone else drive you home.

  • How much do the therapies cost?

As we offer a wide range of treatments – from acupuncture to disc surgery – prices are discussed after an initial consultation. During this visit, you will undergo a thorough assessment, and we will determine the most suitable treatment before providing a cost estimate.

  • Does my supplemental insurance cover the cost?

Usually yes. Many supplemental plans cover the remaining portion not paid by public health insurance.

  • Who performs the treatments?

Dr. Wolfgang Stelzer – Specialist in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Pain Therapy
Dr. Braune – General Practitioner, Acupuncture, Orthomolecular Medicine, Pain Therapy
Dr. Brenner – Specialist in Anesthesiology and Acupuncture

  • Are these treatments suitable for older patients?

Yes. There is no age limit, and the therapies are well tolerated even in elderly patients.

  • I’ve been in pain for 10, 20, 30 years... Is there still hope?

Absolutely. The duration of pain does not determine whether it can be treated. Chronic pain can still be addressed effectively — even after decades.

  • How long is the wait time for a first appointment at SchmerzLOS?
